Our
topic this month will help you and your pet have a safe 4th of
July. Did you know that 1 in 3 dogs are afraid of fireworks? They
much prefer a quieter holiday. Loud noises can be upsetting and
cause anxiety. Here are a few tips to help your pet make it through
this celebration.
-DOGS-
* Leaving the television or radio on can help filter the noise of
the outside festivities.
* Your presence can also calm and reassure your pet that everything
is okay.
* Find a friend - the companionship of a confident dog can reassure
a fearful one.
* Occupy him with food filled toys.
* Feed your dog before the noise starts; this should encourage him
to rest.
* Choose a location in your house that doesn't have windows.
* NEVER punish your dog for being fearful.
-CATS-
* Cats can be just as upset by fireworks as their canine
counterparts.
* Keep him in after dark.
* Try to reduce noises by keeping windows shut and curtains drawn.
* Play soothing music or leave the television on.
* Help your cat feel secure by letting him settle into a familiar
bed or chair.
-EXOTICS-

* Rabbits and other caged animals should be safely secured away from
the sights and sound of fireworks.
