If you are
planning to travel with your pet, at home (in the United States)
or abroad (Internationally), there are some things you should be
aware of.
TRAVEL
IN THE U.S. We
have found that most pet owners who travel within the US by plane,
need a physical exam and signed health certificate within 30 days of
flight. All airlines are different however, and you must first
call your airline or connecting airlines to confirm their rules for
pet travel.
Generally, if you are traveling by car, a copy of
your pets' up-to-date vaccination records are sufficient, however,
it is good to call the State's USDA veterinary office for any
special rules. Always carry your Rabies Vaccine license and
tags.
TRAVEL OUTSIDE THE US Can be tricky. Each country has its own
rules for traveling pets. It is very important to call the
consulate of the country you plan to visit, in order to comply with
their rules.
Almost every country requires a USDA (United
States Department of Agriculture) stamped Health Cetificate in
addition to a physical examination, and a copy of vaccination
(especially Rabies vaccine) records.
The International Health
Certificate must be signed by an accredited USDA veterinarian at the
time of the exam and then sent to the USDA's office in Miami or
Gainesville for the State USDA's office to stamp.
The
USDA Int'l Certificate is then returned to the issuing veterinarian
who gives a copy to the traveler. Additional copies are kept at the
state USDA office, the issuing veterinarian's office, the receiving
country's office (consulate), and one copy stays with the traveling
pet.
If
you are traveling outside the U.S. with a bird, please visit the CITES link below with the US Fish &
Game Commission to download the necessary permits for
travel.
