~ Handling Your Dog~

Puppies are born with a need to socialize. How well he is conditioned when young can carry him through his life.

Petting your puppy and speaking softly has a great effect on him as well as you. Try to avoid playing rough with your dog. This includes playing tug-of-war. This can sometimes lead to aggressive behavior in some breeds. Avoid rough handling.

Touching of your dog's ears and feet when he is a puppy will make it more comfortable for him later on when he is being groomed or having his ears cleaned. Get him used to having its teeth brushed. This habit will keep teeth and gums healthy and free of periodontal disease.

As your puppy grows older, expose him to a wide variety of people and situations. Walk at your pet's individual pace so he does not become overwhelmed. Find a park with children and other dogs to walk through. Walk him through a downtown business area with lots of pedestrians. Reassure him in certain situations so he does not become fearful.

Always remember that dogs, no matter how small and cute, are pack animals and you must be the leader of the pack to have a happy and well-balanced pet. One of the best things you can do for your pet is to take him to obedience training. We can offer references if you are not sure where to go.
