Rabbit Spay (Ovariohysterectomy)

The uterus of the females rabbits is unusual compared with that of the dog or the cat. It is bicornate, each cornua has its own cervix and it is coiled tightly in the caudal abdomen. The uterus is very fragile and it is surrounded by body fat  which make the procedure more complicated. It is an abdominal surgery, the abdomen is carefully shaved and prepared. The incision is done under the belly bottom, the surgeon will remove the uterus and ligate every blood supply to the ovaries and uterus, before removing the organs from the abdominal cavity. Then the surgeon will suture the muscular layer of the abdomen with absorbable sutures and close the skin with staples or surgical glue.  Rabbits have great affinity for chewing sutures on the skin or even the surgical glue, staples are reliable and well accepted by patients and owners, they are removed after the healing of the skin is completed.

The spayed female rabbit will be unable to have bunnies.
