Aloha Puppy Classes
~ Vaccinations ~

Puppies begin their series of vaccinations at 8 weeks of age against Canine Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospira, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus (DHLPP). If they are not with the mother, the series begins at 6 weeks with a temporary vaccination. To reinforce the immunity, the puppies will receive a booster every 3 to 4 weeks until they are 20 weeks old. They can receive a dose of Rabies vaccination at 16 weeks (4 months). DHLPP, commonly referred to as the distemper vaccination, actually is a multiple vaccine that also contains antigens to protect from canine hepatitis, canine parainfluenza, leptospirosis and parvovirus. In your first visit at Aloha you will receive a blue folder with your puppy's picture. This folder will hold your pet's vaccinations records and contain information you must know about each of these diseases. The dog must receive a annual booster of the DHLPP and Rabies vaccination. It is advisable to limit your pup's exposure to other dogs until he is 16 weeks old.

The Bordetella or Kennel cough (KK) vaccination is recommended every 6 months for a solid immunity. It is required at all kennels for boarding and most obedience classes. This is an intra nasal vaccine that can be given at any age. Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory condition that causes coughing and gagging.

Some puppies will experience drowsiness after vaccination. This is normal, but allergic reactions may occur in some puppies. If your dog shows signs of an allergic reaction like hives or a swollen face, medical attention is required.

More serious allergic reactions can affect breathing and usually start within 1 to 2 hours after vaccinations have been given. Seek emergency help immediately, it may be life threatening.
